The Rock City
I
had become separated from my backpacking companion, and I was waiting
for him on the top of the pass on Cerro Khala Ciudad (the Rock City) in
the Bolivian Andes. Before me a labyrinth of ridges dropped into the Amazon.
Behind me the last of my unanswered calls faintly echoed around the deep
glacial valley that contained my mate, Dave. I was alone. In the middle
of nowhere.
So, I added
my stone to the apacheta, a tennis court sized pile of rocks built up
by the innumerable travelers who had been here before me, and waited.
I knew there was no reason for panic, and if I stayed here Dave would
eventually arrive. I had reached a zenith.
It was two
months before my thirtieth birthday. My twenties had been privileged.
I had progressed in a career, which had allowed me to travel the world.
I had run training programs, produced marketing brochures and set up new
business units as I rose through the ranks of a growing New Zealand Adventure
Tourism company.
All the while
when the southern winter closed the business down I had traveled the world.
I'd spent a summer hiking in Aspen, studied in the medieval Spanish city
of Leon, and climbed to 20,000 feet in the Andes. It couldn't go on. I
needed a change.
The copy of
Scientific American I was reading as I waited for my friend had an article
about XML, the latest generation web design language. It seemed there
were so many possibilities in cyberspace. In this remote natural citadel,
on an Incan pathway I decided that the Internet was my future. Then my
friend Dave arrived. After comparing notes, we began the long hot descent
into the jungle.
The Freeway City
I didn't expect to end up in Los
Angeles, but love can lay the best-made plans to waste. I will say the
other half of thinksolo has a pretty impressive resume, but the reasons
I love her are beyond this site.
My vision of web design grew out
of working with design shops on the production of website and brochures
for the tourism ventures I worked for. I am a client who crossed over.
While studying I put my tools to work for a wildlife rescue center and
a computer games manufacturer. I was doing everything from web marketing,
to Powerpoint creative work, project management and database redesign.
I enjoy creative design, but
above all I am a thinker. Before launching my Flash design application,
I ask who is this site for, and how can it best advance the goals
of the people or organization it represents? My mantra is content
before design.
Now, I am in a position to explore
the infinite possibilities of the internet.
