Explanation and analysis of the graphic design, coding and project management work I have done on websites.

Uncle Liam's Hangman Game

This project was conceived as a nephew's birthday present, and a challenging exercise using Flash 5 action scripting.

The file employs scripts to deploy button instances, load and unload movies and sounds as dictated by user input and perform the character matching functions required by the game.

Other flash functions used include dynamic text fields, with embedded fonts, bitmap tracing and sound optimization.

Give it a go!

KiwisinLA Homepage

KiwisinLA is a network of New Zealanders living in the Los Angeles area. Founded in August 2002, membership currently totals over 300 people and their families. All communication with members and promotion of the organization is by cyber word of mouth.

This interface design is completely my own doing. The KiwisinLA committee, on which I serve, gave me a free reign to do as I pleased.

I wanted to combine New Zealand elements, such as the fern motif and the clear blue, with an obvious Los Angeles icon. My preference for a visually strong image, conflicted with the need to have a page that downloads quickly.

To reduce the effect of the longer download time I employed a javascript to ensure the frame with the textual information loaded before the images, so returning visitors could review any updates to the schedule of events quickly while the images loaded.

Additional duties with KiwisinLA involve, managing the membership database, and e-mail contact with members.

This site has since been redesigned.

earth2net.com

This contract was a complete overhaul of the website for a small ISP I do business with.

My brief was to come up with a design that was very clean and simple, but included animation of the logo and featured a satellite moving across space in the top banner. It was to be "pretty functional", and the client choose the minimalist option from the initial concepts I developed.

In addition to the interface design and html coding, I was required to prepare cgi scripts for a number of forms implemented on the site.

The California Wildlife Center Homepage

The California Wildlife Center is a nonprofit wildlife rescue and rehabilitation organization based in the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu.

We began this project in July 2000 when I was embarking on my new life in Los Angeles, and the center was completing it's "foundation phase". It needed to develop a stronger community presence to survive in the long term.

I worked with the center management to refine their strategic goals for the site and managed a team of volunteers to develop the content. I arranged the hosting, did all of the coding and some of the graphic design.

The website is alive, and is regularly updated with center news, fundraising drives and events. As my studies have progressed, the site's capacities have expanded to include interactive forms (cgi-perl) and flash banners. In October 2001 it became E-commerce capable.

This inevitably lead to involvement in other parts of the center's development, such as building brand consistency across all their promotion material, formatting a newsletter and consolidating a number of different data recording systems into a unified database.

This site has since been redesigned.

Limerick from our Invitation

Sarah and I were determined to have a wedding that was anything but frilly. The black and silver site with "greenstone" buttons reflected our intention to create a unique wedding experience that represented our New Zealand heritage.

Sarah and Liam's Wedding Site

At the same time the site had to be retro-coded enough to display on my prospective mother-in-law's version 3 browser. The site included itinerary information, maps, hotel booking information, photographs and an online RSVP function. We did give our guests the option of sending a traditional mail in RSVP, but were surprised how many in the older generation went to great lengths to use the website.

As the wedding was in a popular holiday resort , and involved a boat journey to an island, we had to get people organized and booking accommodation six months prior to the day. We carried our design theme through from an initial pre-invite letter and interactive CD ROM we had developed for our foreign guests, to the table settings, thank-you cards and gifts of a customized CD compilation of our favorite music.

This site is nolonger online.

Alyssa is Moving

Alyssa's Moving Movie

This fun little flash Change of Address card grew out of my work designing corporate powerpoint presentations for Infogrames, a company that makes entertainment software.

One of the more colorful executives was relocating from New York and she wanted a stand out change of address website.

I created a game with Alyssa flying over the country with possible destination cities as interactive buttons.

Clicking a wrong answer produced a quirky little movie explaining why she wasn't going to that city and the right answer took the player to her new address details.

ultimatehikes.co.nz

Ultimate Hikes is the umbrella branding vehicle for a number of guided wilderness walks and treks operated on the South Island of New Zealand.

The companies operating three well known walks in different areas had recently merged and needed an overarching brand that could tie the products together, without diluting the brand equity of the individual operations.

As Operations Manager for the day walking division of the company, I developed a new series of day walks on the popular walking tracks. My interest in marketing of these lead into managing a redesign of the brochures for the established multi-day walks, and the creation of this website.

Ultimate Hikes. My first foray into the Internet

Working as a client sparked my interest in the area of web design. I couldn't bring the scenic wonders of New Zealand's wilderness to Los Angeles, but I could work on websites from anywhere!

I have customized powerpoint presentations for video game manufacturer Infogrames, Nike and the California Wildlife Center. As these contained information for internal use. I have packaged them to highlight the work I did to enhance the presentations.

A web-adapted version of this presentation is linked to this site. Please note: Some of the sound and animation functions of Powerpoint do not translate easily when Powerpoint files are published as web pages. This is best viewed using Internet Explorer.

photoshop and illustration creative

During the course of my study at Santa Monica College I was required to execute a number of Photoshop and Illustrator design projects.

Click on the thumbnail to view a larger image. Please be patient as they download.

Photo Montage

This project required taking scans of several different photographs and merging them together in a realistic way, using Photoshop to match the colors, contrast and brightness of the different images, and to smooth the edges of each composite image.

Movie Poster

Future utilizing these image matching skills, this project introduced the artistic element of combining them in a powerful movie poster. I employed several Photoshop filters in this poster.

Illustrations

This project required using photoshop's path tools to create an outline drawing of an object and using various Photoshop filters and path stroking techniques to give the illustration a 3-dimensional appearance, and create the effect of different surfaces such as colored glass, shiny brass and hard plastic.

Certificate

This Certificate was developed in Adobe Illustrator using text manipulation, patterned brushes and gradient effects.

Illustration

This artwork was created in Illustrator and imported into Photoshop to apply tonal effects. The animal artwork I developed as part of this project was deployed on the California Wildlife Center website.
